On September 14, 2010, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations, met with Patriarch Abuna Paul of Ethiopia. In a warm and friendly atmosphere they discussed topical problems of inter-Christian cooperation and made a high assessment of the relations that used to tie the two Churches in the past.

The head of the Church of Ethiopia informed his high guest about his Church’s status in the society and present day tasks and challenges.

Metropolitan Hilarion begins working visit to Ethiopia

On September 12, 2011, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relation, arrived in the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Ababa, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

He was met at the airport by Mr. V. Utkin, Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, and Archpriest Mikhail Gundyaev, Russian Orthodox Church representative at the World Council of Churches.

The high-level meeting on Preventing and Responding to Hate Incidents and Crimes against Christians took place on September 12, 2011, in Rome. It has become one of the first issue events to be held by the OSCE on the problem of Christanophobia. It was initiated by Lithuania, the present chair of the OSCE, and supported by the Holy See. The forum was attended by representatives of the OSCE member states, international organizations, experts, journalists and scientists.

The Inter-Council Presence’s commission on attitude to non-Orthodoxy and other religions met at the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations on 2 September 2011. The meeting was chaired by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk.

The commission discussed a draft document on mixed marriages prepared by a working group set up at the previous meeting. The draft will be finished with the comments taken into consideration and submitted to discussion.

On 30 August 2011, the commemoration day of the Holy and Right-Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky, Metropolitan Galaktion of Stara Zagora invited hegumen Filipp (Vasiltsev), rector of the St. Nicholas metochion of the Russian Orthodox Church in Sofia, to take part in divine service at the Church of the Nativity of Christ on the Shipka Pass.

On 29 August 2011, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR), met with the president of the Palestinian National Authority Mr. Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.

In a cordial friendly talk they discussed cooperation of the Russian Orthodox Church with the Palestinian National Authority, the situation in the Middle East, and the situation of Christians in the region.

On 26 August 2011, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations (DECR), visited Galilee. He was accompanied by the members of the delegation and by hegumen Feofan (Lukianov), deputy head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission. On the way from Jerusalem, the group saw the ruins of the ancient Emmaus, where the holy apostles Luke and Cleopas met with the risen Christ.
